In the 1871 Census , Joseph Geogarty is listed as 4 years old living with his family at 183 Bell Green Lane, Ince in Makerfield, Wigan. He is living with his Mother Ann ( age 28) and Father Mathew aged 36 and his siblings Mary ( age 3) and Bernard (age 1). Also in the home is Bridget McDermott sister to his mother Ann listed as aged 26 and a Laundry maid. His mother and father and aunty are listed as born in Co Kildare , Ireland. His father Mathew was born and registered in the Irish Catholic Parish Register of 1655 – 1915 as being born in Co Kildare in the town of Lullymore, a very small hamlet.

In the 1881 Census Joseph is listed as 17 years old, living with his family at 183 Bell Green Lane, the household includes Mary , Bernard and three other children John age 9, Ellen age 6 and Roseann a baby.

He has two marriage records. The first in 1890 to Elizabeth Harmond. In the 1891 census he is listed as a widower and is a boarder in the house where he lived. In 1892 he is recorded as marrying for the second time to Sarah Owens in Ince in Makerfield, Wigan. Sarah is 23 years old and has been working as a cotton weaver since the age of 12.

Joseph and Sarah had three children, his son William was born 1 Febuary 1896. His daughter Ester was born 13 Nov 1894 and his son Ernest in 1899.

Joseph Geogarty died in 1900 age 36. His death was recorded on 6/11/1900 by his wife Sarah Geogarty who was present at his death. The record describes the following: Formerly a railway goods guard, injury shock amputation of arm 1yr 18 days post natal. Tumour ( probably malignant) duration not known phthiois 2 months, certified by John Blair MD.

In the 1901 census Sarah Geogarty is listed as the head of the household. Her sister Elizabeth Owens is listed as living at the same residence and is listed as a cotton worker.. Her oldest child William Geogarty is listed as 7 years old.

Sarah Geogarty , living at 32 Frederick Street , Wigan remarried in 1902 to Samuel Kindley a bachelor who worked as a collier. He was living at no 34 Fredrick Street, Wigan . All early records for the son William Gogarty list Frederick St as the place of residence, Samuel Kindley became his step father.
